What is the cremation process for a pet?
More and more owners are choosing cremation after the death of their beloved pet. In Belgium, there are several animal crematoria where one can go to cremate a dog, a cat or another beloved pet.
Having your pet picked up or dropped off
After a phone appointment, your deceased pet will be picked up from your home or veterinarian's office, and transferred with care & respect to the pet crematorium of your choice.
It is also possible to bring your pet to the crematorium yourself. Please note that most pet crematories operate by appointment only.
Saying goodbye to your beloved pet
At most pet crematories, it is possible to say goodbye to your beloved pet in person. If desired, your pet can be laid up in a farewell room for a final salute. Here it is often possible to bring other animals as well, so that they have the opportunity to smell that their friend is no longer there.
Many crematoria also provide the option of accompanying your pet to the cremation area so that you can share the last moment, then say goodbye. This, of course, is not mandatory.
During the cremation, one can take a seat in a waiting area, or go for a walk in the neighborhood and return later for urn collection.
Duration of cremation
The duration of a cremation depends on several factors such as weight, age, breed, and others. The average duration is 1 to 2 hours. Note that the cooling of the ashes takes almost as long as the cremation itself.
After the cremation, you will receive an official cremation certificate with your pet's name and the date of the cremation.
Ashes destination
After cremation, you will receive the ashes of your beloved pet in an ash container. Choosing an asbestos destination for your deceased pet is a very personal choice. Below we list a few options:
- You can opt to keep the ashes in an urn. The urn is then usually given a nice spot at home.
- Ashes can be scattered in the crematorium's scattering field.
- You can scatter the ashes or bury them in a place that has special meaning to you or your pet.
- You can scatter some of the ashes and take a small portion with you in a memorial gem, a stuffed stone or a mini urn.
Cost of pet cremation
The cost of cremating your pet depends on the type of cremation. For an individual cremation, you pay more than for a collective cremation. In a collective cremation, your pet is cremated with a number of other pets. The ashes are then scattered by the crematorium. Other factors that affect the cost are the weight of your pet and what you want to do with your beloved pet's ashes later.
