Buying a beautiful urn for a deceased baby or child
Losing a child is one of the hardest things a person can experience. It is heartbreaking to have to let go of a child when it is still small and vulnerable. It gives an indescribable sadness that involves a lot of disbelief and misunderstanding. Often next of kin choose a small or mini urn to hold the ashes of their beloved child. This way your baby or your child is always a little bit with you, and gets a beautiful, last resting place at home.
Are you obligated to have your baby cremated or buried?
In both Belgium and the Netherlands, there is a clear legal framework. From a gestational age of 26 weeks or 180 days, you are in Belgium legally required to have your deceased child buried or cremated. In Netherlands you are required to cremate or bury your baby after 24 weeks of pregnancy.
How many ashes are released after cremation of a baby or infant?
The average amount of ashes released after the cremation of a baby is between 200 and 600 ml. Below is a table, showing the minimum urn content based on the body weight of your deceased infant son or daughter. Please note that this table is based on averages. It is best to contact your funeral director or the crematorium to request the exact amount of ashes and determine which urn you wish to choose on that basis.
Body Weight | Minimum volume of urn |
---|---|
Less than 1 kg | 200 ml |
1 - 10 kg | 600 ml |
A loving memory
By choosing an urn, you keep your little son or daughter close at all times, a warm and tangible remembrance of your beloved child. Choosing an urn is a very personal, emotional decision and can be quite difficult. Choose an urn that you like, but also that you think fits your child beautifully. It is also helpful that you decide in advance where you want the urn to be placed at home. Based on that, you can decide in what color you want to choose the urn.
