Dividing a deceased person's ashes among several small urns

Distributing the ashes of a dearly departed person

In both Belgium and the Netherlands, it is legal to separate a deceased person's ashes into several parts. The deceased may have determined in their last will what should happen to their ashes after cremation. If no last will is known, the next of kin can make their own choice as to what happens to the ashes.

Asbestos destination options.

If the various next of kin have different wishes regarding the asbestos destination of the dearly departed, it may be a good solution to divide his or her ashes. If the deceased did not express specific wishes about this, each of the next of kin can then choose one of the many options for the asbestos destination of his or her portion.

Some people choose a monument in the cemetery or keep the urn with the ashes at home. Others incorporate the ashes into a small piece of jewelry or scatter them in a special place.

When the next of kin decide to distribute the deceased's ashes, it is a good idea to make this wish known before cremation. That way, the funeral director, the funeral director and/or the crematorium can make the necessary arrangements. It is also important to notify the municipal authorities before the cremation takes place.

Keeping the ashes at home

Once the ashes are distributed, the next of kin can decide what to do with their portion of the ashes. Often people like to keep the ashes of a dear loved one at home. Above the fireplace, in a cabinet or next to a beautiful portrait photo... This feels familiar to some and offers them comfort at difficult times.
