What should you consider when buying an urn?
Purchasing an urn is not an everyday occurrence and can raise many questions, such as “How much ash can the urn hold?”, “Is the urn suitable for outdoor placement?”, “What is a bio-urn?” or “What is the average cost of an urn?” This article aims to help you make the right choice.
A warm, personal remembrance
Perhaps you are not quite sure yet what you want to do with the ashes of your loved one. Take some time to think about this. Discuss the possibilities with family or friends. It may be a good idea to choose a suitable urn in advance. Artemis Urns offers a wide selection of various urns that you can easily order online, ranging from special urns for home preservation and ecologically degradable urns for burial or water to stylish small and simple mini urns.
Large and small urns
If you would like to keep the ashes of your deceased loved one in one urn, we recommend choosing an urn with a capacity of at least 3.5 liters. If you prefer to divide the ashes so that different people (children, family, friends) can keep and cherish a portion of the ashes, you may want to consider dividing the ashes among several small urns or mini-urns.
Different materials
Urns are available in all shapes, sizes, forms, colors, and materials. The most commonly used materials are ceramic, metal, wood, marble, glass, bronze, copper, and steel. All these materials are suitable for indoor storage.
If you prefer a spot outdoors that was very special to you or holds valuable memories, pay close attention to whether the urn of your choice is suitable for outdoor placement (weather and frost-resistant). Most ceramic urns are suitable for both indoor and outdoor placement. This is indicated for each of our urns offered for sale.
About shapes and colors
In addition to the material, the shape and color also play an important role in making your choice. Feel free to browse through our collection and take your time to decide which model suits you or the deceased. We offer spherical, cylindrical, conical, and jug-shaped urns.
Nowadays, there are many more shapes than just the classic urn. We believe it is essential to design urns in such a way that relatives are not constantly reminded of the death of their loved one but do know that he or she is with them. Our collection has gradually grown from a love of minimalism and matter, characterized by textures and imperfection. It is important to us that our loved ones can be cherished in a serene & stylish way, because beauty offers comfort.
Keeping an urn at home
If you want to keep the urn at home, you can choose an urn that matches your style, the interior, or the living environment. You can find more about this in the following article: Remembering a loved one in your interior
You may find it comforting to choose an urn that matches the personal style of your loved one and his/her way of life. The shape, color, and material of the urn then reflect the taste or character of your loved one.
Placing an urn outdoors
Are you considering giving your loved one's urn a place in the open air, such as in an urn garden or urn gallery? Or do you cherish the idea of keeping your loved one close to you, for example in your own garden, where you can create a personal memorial? If you choose this, it is essential to choose materials that are resistant to all weather conditions. To help you with this, we have indicated in our webshop which of the urns are suitable for outdoor use.
Bio-urns
More and more people are choosing to be absorbed into nature after their death. Bio-urns are specially designed to blend into nature, made from organic materials that allow the ashes to slowly dissolve into the environment. If your loved one had a special connection with a special outdoor spot, or if you yourself cherish the wish to bury or scatter the ashes in a special place in nature, then consider a biodegradable urn.
Urn with tea light
The idea of an eternal light as a reminder of a dear loved one can offer much comfort. Do you want to light a candle at home for the one you miss? Then you can create a beautiful moment of remembrance with an urn with a tea light. In or on the urn there is room for a candle, which you can light at moments when you want to commemorate your loved one. Urns with tea lights or candles are available in our online urn shop.
Ashes processing in the Netherlands
After the cremation, there is a legally required period of one month and one day before you can collect the ashes from the crematorium, in order to give them a final destination. During this time, the ashes of your loved one are kept in an ash box, which is temporarily placed in a specially designed niche in the crematorium.
