Special Ashes Destinations

Special things you can do with a loved one's ashes

After cremation, there are several ways to keep or scatter the ashes. Some people like to keep (part of) the ashes at home in a beautiful urn, in a special place. Others prefer to have the ashes scattered at the cemetery (scattering meadow or scattering forest), buried in an urn field or interred in a columbarium at the cemetery. But there are other ways to do asbestos disposal.

Scattering ashes at sea

In both Belgium and the Netherlands, it is forbidden to scatter the ashes of a deceased person freely in the sea. What is allowed, however, is the use of a biodegradable urn. This urn fills with seawater after being dropped into the water and sinks gently to the bottom. There, after some time, it breaks down and the ashes mix with the seawater. There are several companies that offer this form of asbestos disposal.

An organic choice

You can store the ashes of the deceased in a biodegradable urn for minimal carbon footprint. After closure, the urn is buried in the ground. The urn is made of fertile clay and is therefore very suitable for placing a shrub or tree on top of the urn.

An ash jewel

After the loss of your loved one, it can often be comforting to be able to carry that person with you always. With ash jewelry, this is possible. This ash jewelry contains a small hollow space in which you can place a symbolic amount of ashes. The possibilities are endless: pendants, bracelets, rings & necklaces.

A diamond is forever

You can have the ashes of the deceased incorporated into a brilliant diamond as a keepsake. This in turn can then be set on a pendant or ring. The carat and color depends on your own wishes. Several companies in Belgium and the Netherlands offer this service.

The final journey

The company Celestis in Texas, USA, offers space flights where you can have your loved one's ashes scattered in space. Celestis has been doing space burials - or memorial flights, as they call it - since the 1990s. The ashes are taken by rocket into orbit, where they remain until they re-enter the atmosphere, evaporating like a shooting star as a final tribute.
