Placing an urn outside: what should you pay attention to?
An urn placed outdoors must withstand a variety of weather conditions, such as rain, heat and especially freezing temperatures. Ceramic urns are frost-resistant, extremely strong, and therefore ideally suited to be placed outdoors. Below, we provide some tips for safely and peacefully placing an urn outside.
Ceramic urns
Ceramic urns are made from natural clay and receive a glaze coating on the outside. This gives the urns a refined and beautiful appearance. And because they are fired at high temperatures, glazed urns are frost-resistant, and thus particularly suitable for outdoor use.
However, you should make sure that no water can seep into the urn (the inside is not always glazed). Therefore, we always recommend sealing the urn by gluing the lid. This is very common even when an urn is placed indoors.
In addition, it is best to place the urn on a flat & dry surface, not directly on the ground (earth), in the grass or in a flower bed. By placing the urn e.g. on a stone, a pedestal or on a ground plate you prevent soil or rain water from under the urn, into the urn and will break during frost.
Are Artemis urns suitable for outdoor use?
Most Artemis urns are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, but not all are.
If you want to place an urn outdoors, you should choose an urn that is glazed on the outside. A glaze coating provides the urn with a durable, non-porous exterior, preventing water from entering the urn.
Because of this, a glazed urn is weather and frost resistant and can be placed in the garden, for example. Ceramics are also colorfast, so even after years of being outside, a ceramic urn still looks beautiful.
In addition to glazed urns, Artemis also has a number of organically degradable urns in its collection (engobe). These eco-urns are handmade from natural clay, into which a small amount of recycled paper (in the form of paper pulp) is added.
Unlike glazed urns, these urns are fired at a very low temperature making them quite porous and easily degraded in nature.
Notice. These biodegradable urns are prone to breakage, not frost-resistant and therefore not suitable for outdoor placement (though they are suitable for burial or watering).
For each model in our webshop, you can consult whether the urn in question is frost-resistant or not.
