What to do with the ashes of a loved one?

Scattering the ashes of your beloved or choosing an urn?

When your loved one has died and cremation was chosen, it is important to consider what will be done with the ashes. Like a beautiful farewell service, a thoughtfully chosen destination for the ashes can help you cope with your grief. Scattering the ashes? Opt for a memorial urn? Or perhaps a combination of both?

First and foremost, we would recommend that you take your time when deciding on an asbestos destination. Go for something that suits you, but more importantly the deceased, because ultimately that is the best way to preserve and cherish the special memories of your dear loved one.

Scattering ashes

Crematoria have special scattering fields in most cases. The scattering of ashes is done at a time agreed upon with you. Together with family and friends, you can attend the scattering of ashes and say goodbye to your beloved one in a serene way.

In the Netherlands (not in Belgium), it is also permitted to scatter your loved one's ashes in your own garden or outdoor space, close to his or her favorite spot.

An option also chosen is to scatter the ashes in the sea, in a lake or in a river.

Why keep the ashes?

There are several ways you can preserve your loved one's ashes, including in an urn. Keeping ashes in an urn has several advantages.

  1. An urn offers a special way to preserve the ashes of a loved one. The urn is a unique, beautiful and tangible object that keeps the memory of the deceased alive. There are many different types and styles of urns available to choose from, allowing you to find an urn that perfectly suits you and the personality of the deceased.
  2. By keeping ashes in an urn, you create a physical place to cherish the memories of the dearly loved one. The urn can be kept at home. After all, some people like to have a place to remember the deceased. Keeping the ashes at home allows you to cherish your loved one in your own familiar surroundings.
  3. Keeping ashes in an ornamental urn is a common way to honor the deceased. The urn provides an emotional and tangible reminder that makes the loss of the loved one less painful for bereaved families. Saying goodbye is difficult. Keeping the ashes keeps your loved one close, allowing you to say goodbye in your own personal way and at your pace.

Preserving ashes in a memorial urn

There are many special ways to preserve your loved one's ashes, but maybe you just want to keep it simple. A beautiful, stylish urn at home, in the living room, on the closet or in some other special place, is a fine way to remember your loved one. An alternative is a place in an urn wall, in an urn field or urn garden, at a crematorium or in a cemetery. In the Netherlands (not in Belgium) you can also bury the urn in your own garden.

Urns are available in many sizes, colors and made of different materials (from classic urns to modern urns, over memorial urns & ornamental urns). Artemis urns offers a collection of urns that are unlike the traditional urn due to their shape, materials and appearance. A number of our urns are biodegradable, making them suitable - in addition to being kept at home - for burial or immersion.

Think carefully about your choice

Scattering your loved one's ashes is something you generally only do once. So it is important to think about it carefully. Next of kin often have different wishes and ideas about what they want to do with the deceased's ashes. So take the time to make good choices and have a conversation. And it is always possible to share the ashes with each other. That way everyone can make their own choices for their own remembrance.
