Placing an urn outdoors: in your own garden, in a columbarium wall, or in a cemetery?

Are ceramic urns suitable for outdoor use?

When a loved one has died and been cremated, you can preserve and cherish the ashes in a variety of ways. You can choose to scatter the ashes, interred in an urn wall (or columbarium), bury the urn in a cemetery or keep the ashes in a beautiful urn at home. Nowadays, many bereaved people choose to keep the urn close by, at home, in the garden or on the balcony. In this way, one can create one's own memorial place, without having to take into account the rules of the cemetery or crematorium.

Weatherproof urns

Urns made from materials such as marble, granite, stainless steel, glass or ceramic are ideally suited to be placed outdoors. These urns are durable, frost-resistant and low-maintenance, and will be little damaged or discolored by sunlight, rain, cold or heat. Notwithstanding these urns are very robust, they can still be elegantly and decoratively designed. If your loved one was someone who loved to spend time outdoors, it may be a nice idea to give his/her urn a beautiful memorial place in the garden or on the balcony.

Are Artemis urns suitable for outdoor use?

Most Artemis urns are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, but not all are. For each product, you can consult whether the urn in question is frost-resistant or not.

Our urns are made from natural clay and receive a glaze coating on the outside. This gives the urns a refined and beautiful appearance. And because they are fired at high temperatures, glazed urns are frost-resistant, making them suitable for outdoor use.

However, you must ensure that no water can seep into the urn (the inside is not always glazed). Therefore, we always recommend sealing the urn by gluing the lid (both for indoor and outdoor use).

When placing the urn in the garden, it is best to do so on a flat & dry surface, not directly on the ground (soil), in the grass or in a flower bed. By placing the urn on a stone, a nice pedestal or on a base plate you prevent soil or rainwater from entering the urn from below and breaking during frost.
